Ladies, if every year without fail the forces of February 14th make you wonder why you haven’t found your Prince Charming, perhaps it’s because you’ve been playing the same cards year after year. Well this year if you’re ready, you can do some self-help reading to help you pick out the bad seeds from the bunch by quickly identifying signs of potentially serious psychological issues in a man.
Barbara Hayes, MS, MFT, licensed marriage and family therapist and author of the new book, “Beware of Dogs”, offers strategies, quizzes and tips on how to date cautiously. According to Hayes, she wrote this book to help women understand how to determine the difference between the petty issues that plague most relationships and the big red flags that show the relationship is headed for disaster. Her new book serves as a Valentine’s Day survival guide which features unique insights to finding and keeping the perfect man as well as how to confidently spend this "holiday for lovers" alone. “For singles who feel sad on this day,” she states “think of all of the bad Valentine’s Days that you have had with Mr. So-Wrong and all of the poor women who are having them now.” Hayes also suggests that on this day, singles should pamper themselves by doing any of the things that they never did because their ex didn’t want to do them, or enjoy some quality “you-time” with silly soap operas or taking a long bubble bath. “Remind yourself that the next relationship you get into will be with someone kind, caring, and considerate because you are committed to never again settling for Mr. Will-Do-for-Now.”
As a final note to all single women, Hayes strongly encourages that after every bad date, hurtful relationship or broken heart, you should do the one thing that can literally trigger your brain to make you feel happier. “Smile! Research shows that smiling sends a signal to your brain that you feel happy, which causes you to smile some more, which causes you to feel even happier, and so the cycle perpetuates itself!”
